How to Store Your BBQ After Summer?

As summer comes to an end, it’s always a good idea to prepare your BBQ for storage, as it probably won’t be used again for six months or so. This not only protects it from the weather but also extends its lifespan while not in use. Taking a few simple steps now can make a big difference to making sure your BBQ is clean and ready to go when it’s time to move the grill outdoors and fire it up again.

The tips below apply to charcoal grills and gas BBQs — so take note, and let’s get into them!

First Things First, Clean It

You can’t just close the lid and walk away when storing your BBQ after the grilling season. Proper cooling and cleaning allow your grill to return to its glory in the summer. Here are three steps to follow:

Use fire and preheat

It turns out that fire can actually help with cleaning. Preheat the cooking grids one last time for about 10-15 minutes. The heat will burn off some debris and help harden grease, making it easier to clean. Afterwards, use a wire brush to knock off as many food particles and other grime as possible from the grates. Make sure the grill is cool enough before doing so; turn it off if it’s a gas variant.

Grab a bucket, some soap, and a scrubber

You’ll still need to do some deep cleaning after finishing with the grates. This time, focus on the rest of the grill. Prepare and fill a bucket with water and a degreaser soap to scrub the grates again, as well as the inside of the BBQ.

If you’re dealing with a charcoal grill, dispose of the charcoal first. Make sure the grill has cooled, then remove the cooking grids, flame tamers, and burners (applicable to gas), including any ash catchers or drip pans. Soak the scrubber in your soapy water and start scrubbing away any remaining residue.

Rinse everything under a tap or with your hose to remove any soap residue, and dry it with a fluff-free tea towel. Once everything is dry, put the grill back together. You might as well take this opportunity to check if any parts need replacement or maintenance.

Finally, wipe down the exterior

Use a damp, soapy cloth to remove sticky sauce drippings, hardened marinades, or other remnants from past meals. If left unattended, these can lead to mould, corrosion, or harmful bacteria growth during storage. This can occur even if the interior is clean, so don’t neglect the exterior, even if it’s a pizza oven or portable BBQ. Avoid using abrasive cleaners unless specifically directed to do so.

Protect and Store Your BBQ

Once you’ve cleaned your grill inside and out, it’s ready to be stored in your garden shed or garage. However, don’t leave it uncovered — dust and insects can get inside, so it’s best to cover the grill to maintain its sparkling state.

A heavy-duty BBQ cover will protect it from the elements. Choose a cover made of polyester with PVC backing or vinyl for durability. Make sure it fits your grill well without sagging or leaving any areas exposed to moisture or debris.

While air drying the grill is fine, you might want to towel it off to ensure it’s completely dry before covering it. And that’s it — your BBQ is ready for storage for the upcoming colder months!

Invest a little time and effort into storing your BBQ properly. That way, you’ll be rewarded with a grill ready to fire up when the next summer season arrives. If you haven’t purchased one yet, check out our incredible BBQs on sale!
